Oh So Fab – The Interview

I have been wanting to add a “Vendor Spotlight” to my blog forever! But time never seems to permit. Well recently I had the opportunity to virtually sit down with Melissa Weiss (no relation) from the super popular and talented wedding design/planning team at OH SO FAB .Tina, the head “Fabby” was out on maternity leave, giving birth to her beautiful daughter. I expect she will post some pics on her blog shortly.

I am lucky to work with Oh So Fab fairly regularly (including Sarah’s wedding-see above). What I am always impressed by is the precision with which they run a wedding and the breathtaking beauty of their wedding designs. They truly make my job very easy!

How did you get started in planning?

I had spent my entire life planning everyone’s parties from a birthday party to a shower or even helping on weddings. Everyone I knew was always telling me I should be an event planner for a living. I was working in the fashion industry for years and finally made the career change and have never looked back. I sought out an apprenticeship after being advised to do so by a wedding author and found my niche!

What do you see as the most popular wedding trends?

I think the biggest trend right now is to “be unique”. Everyone wants something that none of their friends have done or seen before. We pride ourselves in customizing and personalizing every wedding, so our clients are always thrilled to start going over our creative design proposals. Bright colors are a huge trend as well as unique favors, professional lighting and valet favors.

What is your first step in the process of working with a wedding couple?

First, we always establish a budget. Second, we get a “feel” for the couple and find out how to make their wedding truly all about them and who they are while staying within their budget.

What advice would you give someone who just got engaged today?

I always tell people that are newly engaged to just enjoy being engaged for a little while before jumping into wedding plans. Once plans do begin, we always tell them to secure a date and location followed by their photographer, videographer and music. Once those are done, you have a little breathing room to think about your design aspect including floral designers and stationers as well as color palates and bridesmaid’s dresses!

What is your favorite moment in a wedding?

Personally, my absolute favorite moment is watching the groom see the bride for the first time. Whether it’s her coming down the aisle on the arm of a parent or if it’s when they take their pictures and it’s his first time seeing her. I love it!

Can pigs-in-a-blanket be classy? (This is my personal crusade to have them at every wedding. I get giddy when I see them. Granted, all photography stops for a couple of minutes..but I am a very happy and creative photographer afterwards.)

Absolutely! I am not going to lie. I love them too and get excited when I see them! Comfort food as passed hors d’ouerves is a huge trend right now anyway!

Which celebrity wedding are you dying to design?

It would be pretty cool to do Brad and Angelina’s wedding. You know there would be a fabulous “green” element to it which I’ve personally never done and definitely some great kid-friendly elements which are always so fun for me!

Are destination weddings all they’re cracked up to be?

I think if it best suits who you are as a couple, then it’s the perfect plan. If you have a huge family and no money to get them all there and family is important for you to be at your wedding, it’s probably not your best idea! But, if you can get the people you most want there and you can all go on a very special vacation, go for it!

Tell me a little bit about oh so fab (Okay, I know all about them since I work with them a lot, but I thought I’d ask for your sake…)

Oh So Fab is best known for the creative events that are never the same as the one before. One of the best elements for me of Oh So Fab, however, is the different personalities on the staff who each have their own strength and talent, yet all collaborate and work amazing together!

What was your very favorite wedding or favorite aspect of your favorite wedding?

It’s so hard for me to pick. There was a wedding that Christy and Tina did that was all wintery and black and white, so it was cozy yet modern. I have a special allegiance to a wedding that Allyson and I designed that was organic and chic at the same time for an amazing couple. I love all the weddings for different reasons, but I think those two are my favorites. My favorite aspect is the combination of two seemingly opposite feelings that come together in a surprising way!
